Imagining the Aqua Peach Branch Epoxy Coasters and Stand

In my efforts to find uses for each part of the tree I often find myself left with branches. After some head scratching, in a previous project I set them in epoxy and made some exposed branch stands. I really like how they came out and so did other people. I had a friend reach out and request some make, so I obliged. They have a beautiful peach tree in their front yard. It had some good years of growth and was hanging over into their neighbor’s yard. They wanted to trim it back a bit, and being the good friend that I am, I went over and trimmed their tree for them. Well it was only a couple branches that were hanging over the yard, but this gave me the material I needed to make their stand and coasters.

If you are a DIY enthusiasts and woodworking fan looking for new project ideas, you can try your hand at making a unique branch stand and coaster set using epoxy. This project is perfect for those who want to make use of every part of a tree, even the branches. It can be done in some straightforward steps.

Quick Steps

  1. Cut branches to desired length
  2. Place branches into desired mold
    • Use a premade mold of container lined with material that will not adhere to epoxy
  3. Prepare epoxy as described on the container
    • Add desired amount of colored mica powder to add color
  4. After it is mixed well, pour the epoxy into the mold with the branches to desired height
  5. Allow time to set as per epoxy instructions
  6. Remove from mold
  7. Cut the branch embedded epoxy block to desired shape and size

Dry and cut the branches

Start by collecting some branches and allowing them to dry completely. Using a miter saw, hand saw, shears, or other cutting tools appropriate for the job, cut the branches to about three inches longer than the mold you will be using, the extra length will be the exposed portion of the branch stand.

Use a mold to hold them in place or create patterns

For this project, I used a premade silicone mold in the shape of a cylinder for the coasters and a tin container lined with plastic sheeting for the stand. The plastic sheeting prevents the epoxy sticking to the tin container. Either mold option works, feel free to share any other mold ideas you have in the comments.

Pour colored epoxy in the mold to set the branches

Stuff as many branches of varying thickness into the mold as possible, arranging them in patterns if desired. Then, prepare the epoxy according to the instructions on the container, adding varying amounts of colored mica powder for a stunning accents of color. Slowly pour the mixed epoxy solution into the mold, ensuring the branches are covered to the desired height, but not overflowing the mold.

Remove epoxy-branch block from mold and cut to size and shape

Let the epoxy cure for the specified amount of time, and remove the mold from the hardened epoxy block. Cut the branch-embedded epoxy cylinder into slices to use as coasters or slice off a sliver from the top to expose the inner parts of the branches for a stand.

Finish with sanding and oiling

Cut the blocks into any shape or size desired, and finish with sanding and Danish oil. This project is a great way to repurpose branches and create beautiful, one-of-a-kind pieces for use or display. With a little creativity and patience, anyone can create their own branch stand and coaster set using epoxy woodworking techniques. This beautiful branch stand with matching coaster set is now ready to use or display!
